What if?

Bear with me…

What if… What if they AREN’T atypical afterall?

If they - people with down syndrome - resemble God, have a heart like Jesus’, and remind others so often of what it’s like to be truly happy, compassionate, kind, accepting, loving, genuine, non-judgmental, and are sincerely joyful rays of light, who are we to say that they aren’t the way we should ALL actually be? Why do we want to find an answer to that extra chromosome? Why is it considered a “spontaneous abnormality” and not a special touch from the Lord’s hands himself? Why do doctors encourage termination in utero? Why are we “sorry” when an expecting parent finds out the GLORIOUS news? Why do we weep with the diagnosis? Why do we want to mold and shape them to fit societal “norms” and expectations? Why aren’t WE changing to match THEM!? Why aren’t WE learning from THEM?

John 9:2 — His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

John 9:3 — Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.

Reclaiming God’s image upon those who are often dehumanized by our society will require us to see people with Down syndrome not as living reminders of our fallenness, but rather as living testimonies of what it means to truly be “fearfully and wonderfully made.”

Here’s the thing —

Yes, majority of population has 46 chromosomes. However, the person that has taught me the most, loved me the fiercest, ultimately favored God the best, and given me the closest glimpse into Heaven happens to have 47 chromosomes.

So... What if?

Can't you see it, too?
