Why Canvas & Clay?

Todd Galberth, a gospel singer, worship leader, and the artist of the song "More Like You," tells about an experience he shared with a potter:

The potter, speaking to Todd, stated, "It's just dirt. Just like me and you.. it's just dirt. It only becomes something when it's in the right hands."

The potter then put a lump of unformed clay that didn't look like anything, that didn't look like it had any worth, into Todd's hands. Todd began to mimic the potter. With the first step, the potter said, "You've got to throw the clay forcefully onto the table. Press it hard onto the table because it has to stick. You can't hurt it. Don't worry about it because it will be what you want it to be in the end."

As they began to form the clay, the potter told Todd, "Put your hands around it. Do you feel that? You'll know when it's ready -- when it becomes smooth. You'll know when it's really ready when it stops fighting you. As long as you feel resistance, you can't form it. The moment it agrees with you and the moment it stops fighting you, that's when you can form it. That's when it will be what you need it to be."

Todd compared his experience with the potter to the encounters we have with God our Father.

We have to REFUSE to stop fighting God and outwardly say, "Whatever you have to do, make me and mold me."

It's such a liberating feeling to consider God as an artist. That we meant and will always mean so much to God that He -- who created the sun and moon -- believes WE, as individuals, are every bit of worthy in His eyes. Just imagine... He who dresses the lilies with beauty and splendor clothes US. He who watches over every sparrow loves US. (Matthew 6:25-34) He predestined our lives and built, molded, made us into the people we are by His own hands.

"He determines the stars and calls each of them by name." (Psalm 147:7). And WE are just as beautiful, important, and meaningful to God as each of those stars. So even when we feel worthless, He sees pure beauty, and molds us into the glorious pieces of artwork He knows we are.

Psalm 139:13 states, "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb." The song "Canvas and Clay" is the perfect reminder that we are created in God's perfect image for a purpose, on purpose. God formed our most precious baby in HIS image. Michael and I have NO DOUBT this angel given to us for a special, non-coincidental reason will honor God all the days of his life because in Rhett's short time on Earth, our son is already teaching and reminding us to do the same daily. Our son, so fresh and new to this side of Heaven is teaching US, reminding US, healing US, and refocusing OUR attention to The One who deserves it most. Crazy, huh?

Romans 8:28-29: "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sister."

God knew every detail of our marriage, our pregnancy, and our parenthood before we did, so we trust that He is working all things out for good. During this time and in every day to come, we will allow God, our Artist and Potter, to continue to work out every detail - whether good or bad - for His glory and for His name. For nothing has been wasted. There's been no failures or mistakes.
